Wheelin’ and Dylan in Montpelier

It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls. . . the Annual Great Green Mountain Bob Dylan Wannabe Contest returns to Montpelier’s City Hall, from 7-10, Saturday, Nov. 28, after a one-year hiatus.

Now in its fifth year, the annual event was first held in 2004 and has become a quirky Vermont tradition, drawing an audience of around 250 and a couple dozen Dylantantes who vie for the coveted King of the Bobs crown.  Performances range from terrific to horrific – much like Dylan’s own immense body of work and trademark nasally voice.

There’s no shortage of laughs as these Zimmermen and Zimmerwomen take the stage in an effort to upstage their fellow Bobs.

Patrick Timothy Mullikin, founder of the event, will emcee this year’s contest, flying in from Malibu, Calif., where Dylan himself resides.  “It’s great to see the event has risen from the ashes,” he said. The event was not held in 2008 as Mullikin was working as an editor for Utah newspaper at that time. “The event has evolved over the past few years and has become a vehicle for fundraising, which is keeping in the Vermont spirit. Holding it right after Thanksgiving is also a great idea. The turnout in 2007 was unbelievable: a packed house.”

This year’s event will benefit Goddard radio station WGDR and Home Share of Central Vermont, and all proceeds from the sales of tickets will be split evenly between the two organizations. Tickets are available at Riverwalk Records and Bear Pond Books in Montpelier and L.A.C.E. and Exile on Main Street in Barre at $10 apiece. The 2007 show sold out and was standing room only.

While there is no registration fee for contestants, there is a limit of no more than 30 contestants. (That’s a lot of Dylan!)  Deadline for registration is Friday, Nov. 20.  To sign up online, visit http://patricktimothymullikin.com/RegistrationInformaton.aspx.

Individuals or organization interested in supporting this great community event and WGDR and Home Share of Central Vermont are encouraged to send checks, payable to:
